In 1891, Asa Griggs Candler bought the rights to Coca-Cola and founded the Coca-Cola Company. Under his leadership, the company expanded rapidly, and Coca-Cola became a global brand, available in over 200 countries and territories today.
Coca-Cola was first invented in 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia. He created the drink as a “brain tonic and intellectual beverage” that was supposed to cure headaches and relieve fatigue. The original recipe included coca leaves, which contained cocaine, and kola nuts, which contained caffeine.
The First Serving The first serving of Coca-Cola was poured at Jacobs’ Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886. The drink was initially sold at a price of five cents per glass, and it quickly became popular with the local population.
